Job Summary

The CAD Programmer position at West Central Steel plays a vital role in the overall success of meeting our customer’s needs accurately and in a timely manner. The CAD Programmer is responsible for the CAD programming of production equipment for part specifications to customer prints, responsible for the basic upkeep and corrections to programs. They use blueprints and design sketches to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product.  3-5 years of experience in the field or in a related area is preferred.  This position works closely with sales and our machine operators to get processing orders through our plant as seamless as possible. CAD experience, attention to detail, excellent communication, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are the keys to success at this position.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Drafting thermal cut parts using multiple CAD Packages including AutoCAD & Solidworks.
  • Convert geometry to useable NC code for the appropriate machine language from 2D & 3D Platforms
  • Create tasks for machine specific operations generating CNC coding for thermal cutting machines including Plasma, Oxyfuel torch, & laser.
  • Work with Enterprise PDM for archiving and production data management
  • Coordination of parts from the customer to completion of the order.
  • Scheduling of orders
  • Work with variety of geometry data to create accurate customer programs for production
  • Interaction with sales, customers, and shop personnel for parts production.
  • Interact with the cutting equipment in a “hands on” capacity in conjunction with our machine operators.
  • Assisting in double checking your co-workers work
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong Drafting skills are a must.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD required
  • Print reading
  • Attention to Detail
  • Experience with CNC machines are helpful.
  • Ability to work with other people; customers, sales and production.
  • Willing to work in the production area of our business.

Job Summary

The Warehouse Switch Truck Driver drives truck or tractor trailer units to spot equipment for loading.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit as well as walking and reaching with hands and arms. Climbing in and out of the truck cab will be done many times per shift. Most trailer switches will be done with the switch tractor equipped with a Barrett Lift, but some hand cranking of dollies will be required. The employee must regularly lift, or bar up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The start time for this position is 8:00pm Monday through Friday. Your job is complete when all the trucks are loaded or 6:00am, whichever comes first. This position will report to the Warehouse Night Supervisor.

Job Responsibilities

  • Drives truck or tractor trailer units to spot equipment for loading.
  • Inspects truck and trailer equipment such as tires, lights, brakes, dollies, and deck for defects prior to spotting in load bays.
  • Assists other employees in loading and unloading trucks.
  • Occasional crane operation and truck loading.
  • Secure loads and tarp on occasion when trailer needs to be driven on the public street or parked outside in inclement weather.
  • Navigate our computer system to view and pull orders accurately and efficiently.
  • Determine what products to pull while paying careful attention to specific product details and be able to differentiate between similar descriptions.
  • Identify material using a measuring tape, caliper, printed locations, and designated color codes.
  • Pull material from our inventory using overhead cranes
  • Tag and package orders for shipping using overhead bridge crane and pneumatic
  • banding equipment per customer-specific order instructions.
  • Record employee number, quantity pulled, and location information on a
  • computer tablet.
  • Operate 1, 5, 10, or 20-ton crane with a 16-function pendant control or radio
  • frequency controls.
  • Verify material received with receiving documents for quality assurance purposes.
  • Count, measure, and apply the proper barcodes to the incoming material.
  • Load material onto outgoing trucks according to designated production documents.
  • Analyze shipments and determine the best method for loading considering the order of stops, shipment size, and the weights of different loads to properly distribute weight on the vehicle.
  • Record employee number, quantity loaded, and special requirements on the loading document.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Valid Class-A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Valid I.C.C. Medical Card in possession.

Job Summary

The Warehouse Material Handler is responsible for pulling, loading, and receiving steel. Physical requirements include standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and grasping. Available shifts include day, mid-shift, and night shifts. All warehouse employees report directly to the Warehouse Supervisor. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Navigate our computer system to view and process orders accurately and efficiently.
  • Determine what products to pull while paying careful attention to specific product details and be able to differentiate between similar descriptions. 
  • Identify material using a measuring tape, caliper, printed locations, and designated color codes.
  • Pull material from our inventory using a side loader forklift. Some of the items pulled will be hand stacked on fork tines while other orders may require material to be taken to the pulling station. Overhead bridge cranes are used to pull material in all other locations of the warehouse.
  • Tag and package orders for shipping using overhead bridge crane and pneumatic banding equipment per customer-specific order instructions.
  • Operate 1, 5, 10, or 20-ton cranes with a 16-function pendant control or radio frequency controls.
  • Verify material received with receiving documents for quality assurance purposes. 
  • Count, measure, and apply the proper barcodes to the incoming material.
  • Load material onto outgoing trucks according to designated production documents.
  • Analyze shipments and determine the best method for loading considering the order of stops, shipment size, and the weights of different loads to properly distribute weight on the vehicle.

Job Responsibilities

  • Use CNC controls for proper setup.
  • Pull and process orders.
  • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and jib cranes as needed.
  • Read prints and drawings.
  • Understand and use measuring equipment.
  • Inspect parts per control plan.
  • Properly identify non-conforming items. 
  • Maintain your machines daily and adhere to monthly inspections.
  • Package orders and properly tag them prior to shipment.
  • Ensure that all items on the process sheet are pulled and packed securely.
  • Properly stage material and locate for loading.
  • Assist with quality assurance inspections prior to shipment.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience operating a CNC Machine.
  • 1 year of experience operating a Press Brake Machine.
  • Ability to use and read a 25’ measuring tape to 1/16 of an inch.

Semi-Truck Drivers are essential to our company’s success at West Central Steel. They’re one of the key elements in fulfilling our promise to provide quick turnaround times on every order. Likewise, they’re a frontline representative of our team when it comes to interacting with customers and other members of our industry. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Drives truck to and from destinations in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota.
  • Secures and protects the load using chains and straps as required by law and our customers.
  • Covers or tarps the loads as required by the customer and inside management.  Most trailers have Conestogas that make covering the load easy.
  • Inspects trucks for defects before and after trips and submits reports indicating truck condition.
  • Maintains driver log according to DOT regulations.
  • Assists other employees or customers in loading and unloading trucks. 
  • Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, fuel, oil, and water.

Skills and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Two or more years of semi driving experience or training.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License required – Class A.
  • Valid DOT Medical Card.
  • Ability to speak effectively before customers or our employees.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and bills of lading. 
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to solve problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
